Lingxiao Pagoda

The Lingxiao Pagoda sits to the west of Xinglong Temple in Zhengding County, Hebei Province.

The Lingxiao Pagoda is commonly known as the Wooden Pagoda among local people since it is entirely made of wood. It is one of the few extant wooden pagodas in China. According to historical records, the pagoda was built in 860 during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and was frequently renovated during
the Song (960-1279), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties. The present pagoda was mainly constructed in the Song-Yuan period.

Octagonal in shape, the nine-storied pagoda is 42 meters high. From the first to the fourth floors the pagoda is made of bricks and wooden eaves. From the fifth floor to the top, it is made entirely of wood. The pagoda body rises from the second floor to meet the top, layer by layer. Its most
distinct feature is the firm column at its center. This particular construction style has long disappeared. Among the existing wooden pagodas, including the Shijia Pagoda of the Fuguan Temple in Shanxi Province and the Cishi Pagoda of Dunhuang in Gansu Province, such semi-wooden-elements only
remain in the Zhangye Wooden Pagoda in Gansu and the Lingxiao Pagoda in Zhengding (the latter is many years older than the former). Hence, the Lingxiao Pagoda is important to the study of ancient Chinese architecture. The Lingxiao Pagoda was partly destroyed during an earthquake in 1966, but was
later repaired and opened to the public.

 Library>Culture ABC>Folk Way>Ethnic Food

Xibe

The Xibe ethnic minority mainly resides in the counties in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Xibes are good at riding horse, shooting arrows, singing and dancing. Xibes used to be engaged in hunting and fishery. They were polytheists in the past, and some of them believed in Lamaism. Xibes
live on grains, including wheat, paddy, maize, broomcorn millet, glutinous rice and millet.

Xibes have a rich variety of foods, including wheaten food such as leavened dough, unleavened dough,Guokui(roasted cake), steamed bread, noodles, and hand pulled noodles; stuffed food such as stuffed bun, stuffed dumpling, leek dumpling, and meat pancake; and rice food such as cooked paddy
rice,Shouzhuarice (rice eaten with hands rather than chopsticks or spoons), and rice (millet) porridge.

Falakakafen(leavened dough) is the indispensable daily staple food.

The meat food mainly comes from homebred livestock, including beef, mutton and pork. In slack winter seasons, Xibes often go hunting, and meat of boar, wild duck, wild rabbit, and gazelle is often seen on the dining table in winter. Xibes have a special way of cooking pork. When butchering pigs,
they cut boiled pork and viscera into small pieces, and mix them with cooked blood sausage, as well as mashed garlic, chopped green onion and salt. The food is delicious but not greasy. It is called pig blood and meat mixture.

Xibes have a very special kind of pickles calledHatuhunsuojiorHuahuacai. It is made of grown leek, red and green pepper, celery, yellow radish and cabbage. Because the vegetables are mixed with salt and put into the jar in time, the red, green, white and yellow colors remain sharp. In the cold
winter, a dish with so many colorful summer vegetables will surely arouse people’s appetite.

Xibe women are good at making various confiture and canned food.

 Library>Culture ABC>Folk Way>Festivals

Laba Festival

Origin

Laba is celebrated on the eighth day of the last lunar month, referring to the traditional start of celebrations for the Chinese New Year. La in Chinese means the 12th lunar month and ba means eight.

Legends about the origin of this festivity abound. One holds that over 3,000 years ago sacrificial rites called La (腊) were held in the twelfth lunar month when people offered up their preys to the gods of heaven and earth. The Chinese characters for prey (猎物) and the twelfth month (腊 La)
were interchangeable then, and ever since La has been used to refer to both. Since the festival was held on the eighth day of the Last month, people later appended the number eight (ba in Chinese), giving us the current Laba.

The majority Han Chinese have long followed the tradition of eating Laba rice porridge on the Laba Festival. The date usually falls in mid-January.

Legend

Laba rice porridge was first introduced to China in the Song Dynasty about 900 years ago.

Buddhism was well accepted in the areas inhabited by the Han Chinese, who believed that Sakyamuni, the first Buddha and founder of the religion, attained enlightenment on the eighth day of the twelfth month. Sutras were chanted in the temples and rice porridge with beans, nuts and dried fruit was
prepared for the Buddha. With the passing of time the custom extended, especially in rural areas where peasants would pray for a plentiful harvest in this way.

There is, however, another touching story: When Sakyamuni was on his way into the high mountains in his quest for understanding and enlightenment, he grew tired and hungry. Exhausted from days of walking, he passed into unconsciousness by a river in India. A shepherdess found him there and fed him
her lunch — porridge made with beans and rice. Sakyamuni was thus able to continue his journey. After six years of strict discipline, he finally realized his dream of full enlightenment on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. Ever since, monks have prepared rice porridge on the eve and held
a ceremony the following day, during which they chant sutras and offer porridge to Buddha. Thus, the tradition of eating Laba porridge was based in religion, though with the passing of time the food itself became a popular winter dish especially in cold northern China.

According to written records, large Buddhist temples would offer Laba rice porridge to the poor to show their faith to Buddha. In the Ming Dynasty about 500 years ago, it became such a holy food that emperors would offer it to their officials during festivals. As it gained favor in the feudal
upper class, it also quickly became popular throughout the country.

Laba Rice Porridge

Laba rice porridge contains glutinous rice, red beans, millet, Chinese sorghum, peas, dried lotus seeds, red beans and some other ingredients, such as dried dates, chestnut meat, walnut meat, almond, peanut, etc. Actually eight ingredients are used, cooked with sugar to make the porridge tasty.
Northerners prefer to use glutinous rice, red beans, dates, lotus seeds, dried long’an pulp, walnuts, pine nuts and other dried fruits in their porridge; southerners like a salty porridge prepared with rice, soybeans, peanuts, broad beans, taro, water chestnuts, walnuts, vegetables and diced meat.
In the north, it is a dessert with sugar added; in the south, salt is put in. Some people like to add cinnamon and other condiments to add flavor.

Controlling the heat is of great importance in making Laba porridge. At the start, the flame must be high, but the fire is then turned down to let the porridge simmer until it begins to emit a very delicious smell. The process is time-consuming but not complicated.

Laba porridge is not only easy to prepare, but also a nutritious winter food because it contains amino acids, protein, vitamins and other nutrition people need. Cooked nuts and dried fruit are good for soothing nerves, nourishing one’s heart and vitality, and strengthening the spleen. Perhaps that
is why it is also called babao (Eight Treasure) porridge.

 Library>China ABC>Religion>Islamism in China

Islamic Rites and Customs in China

Rites and customs are very important for Muslims in all Muslim regions. In fact, rites and customs have been part of their lives. Since Islam was introduced to China, especially since it was introduced to the hinterland, some rites and customs have been attached particular importance to and have
developed significantly.

Different from other religions, Islam is mainly disseminated through kinship. Especially when the original Muslims came to China, they had not formed an independent organization or a nationality, and rites and customs became an effective way of communication and the tie of unification.

In ancient China, since Islam was an exotic culture and Muslims were immigrants, there were inevitable conflicts between the Han people and the Muslims. The psychological impacts on the Han people by the rule of Mongolians in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) made them have a distorted view on Muslims
and their beliefs. This, in turn, made the Muslims more persistent on their rites and customs to avoid assimilation.

Due to the factors mentioned above, rites and customs have become an important part of Islam and gained obvious characteristics, which are mainly as follows:

A. Elements of Buddhism and Daoism as well as the Han culture were absorbed into Muslim rites and customs, which were particularly obvious on some festivals and wedding ceremonies;

B. There is a sense of patriarchal clan system in rites and customs;

C. Regional characteristics;

D. Double identities of religion and nationality;

E. Due to the given surroundings, Islamic followers strictly abstain from eating pork and lard;

F.There is a big variety of rites and customs and special attention was paid to details.

Jesus Family

Jesus Family was founded by Jing Dianying inShandongProvince in 1921. It was really a crazy religious belief, and was forced to dismiss in 1952.

soffi -

I am running Ubuntu 7.10, and ZDT 0.7.0. I cannot get the sound plugin to work, everytime I put
the plugin-files in my plugin dir the program cannot find anything when restarting the program.
every window has a error sign on it (see attached file). however if I remove the .jar files from
the plugin directory, it works perfectly again. i have tried with roddy and the sound_0.2.0 file
separately, and with both of them in the plugins dir at the same time. the same thing happens no
matter how I do it…

the same thing happened when I tried it with the previous version of zdt.

And also, off topic, how do I get the annotator not to annotate 的 to dí, but de? and 好
sometimes comes with the 4th tone instead of the 3rd. i cant find a way to change this.

really love the new version, specially the flashcards!

Hi Soffi,

Can you delete the sound-0.2.0.jar file? It is no longer compatible with 0.7.0. This was the
original sound plugin and has since been replaced by the net.sourceforge.zdt.sound.adso plugin. I
have now removed this original sound plugin download from the site since it’s confusing.

Regarding your other issue, its sort of a dictionary thing. In the cedict dictionary, those
characters you mentioned have multiple entries in the dictionary which you can see in the tooltip.
In the pinyin display though, it’s just showing the first one it finds. I’m open to suggestions on
improvements the way it displays things though.

Chris

soffi -

ah, the other sound plug-in did the trick. thank you for the quick reply!

maybe a drop-down menu when you click a character/syllable in the annotator, where you can choose
the suitable pinyin? at the moment, the character 大 annotates as dài, which is hardly the most
common pronunciation. it’s no biggie really, but it would be a nice future feature

BaiYuehan -

Hello

I’m struggling to install the adso sound plugin for ZDT 0.7.0. (running XP).

I’ve downloaded the zip file, extracted the following 4 files and placed them in ..Program
Files/zdt/plugins;

jl1.0.jar………………….105,446…………18/07/2007 15:24
mp3spi1.9.4.jar……….24,538…………..18/07/2007 15:24
pinyin_sounds.jar…….7,344,480……….18/07/2007 15:24
tritonus_share.jar…….102,723………….18/07/2007 15:24

but ZDT fails to load them. They don’t show in the Help-> About ZDT screen, or in Sound ->
Preferences.

I’ve also tried deleting the Workspace and Configuration folders in my user area folder, but still
no show.

Do I need to manually register them in some way ?

Thanks for any help…

jbradfor -

For the adso plugin, don’t extract the files from the .jar. Just copy the .jar file as-is into the
plugins directory (leaving it as one file), restart zdt, and enable it in zdt via
windows->preferences->sound

BaiYuehan -

Success at last…thanks for that ! The file type when I downloaded was .zip, and I assumed I had
to extract them first. Just renamed to .jar and it’s working fine now…

jbradfor -

Great! Always glad to help a brother. I assume your last name, Bai, is 白? That’s mine too. So
that makes us brothers

But it’s weird that you d/l it as a zip file.

BaiYuehan -

Thanks 弟兄 (btw, my Chinese is about the same level as my Java at the moment, not v good).

Yes, some mysterious force changes the file types from .jar to .zip

No, no. A mother daughter relationship is very different!!!! This is referring to the relationship
with the man. So maybe 好 could be interpreted as the respectful 子 (like in 孔子，孟子)
and so it’s actually just saying one woman and one man is good, a triangle is just hell!

好！It is modern interpretation.

And what for 美？

gougou -

Split this discussion from this thread, as it originally was meant to be about characters that
underwent simplification.

Quote:

And what for 美？

The original meaning of the character 美 is something that tastes delicious. The character 美
consists of 羊(sheep or goat) and 大 (big), which means big/strong sheep or goats taste
delicious. Hehe.

Quote:

◎ 美 měi
(会意。金文字形,从羊,从大,古人以羊为主要副食品,肥壮的羊吃起来味很美
(2) 同本义 [delicious]
美,甘也。——《说文》

I agree with the “delicious” and “羊(sheep or goat)” , but not quite with the 大 (big).
Any way, the character has the feather a Chinese character is sopposed to have.

It is the most significant feather of Chinese characters, as I understand, that many of them just
enable you to “see” the meaning before actually reading them. That is what I like and why I like.

This is still of the topic of “liking a charater”.

If you spot an incorrect transliteration or character used, please let me know. You don’t need to
know Russian but if you wonder, the English transliteration chosen was more phonetic, especially
the use of ‘ (apostrophe) for letter “ь”.

I made a few nice changes to the page.

1. This page contains only one table at the moment but I made it a separate section, more small
tables to come.
2. Added links for each city/town in the English column.
3. Categorised and added see also links.

To do – comments on transliteration.
Add region (oblast’) names where they are different from the centre (e.g. Yekaterinburg -
Sverdlov), autonomous republics – Tatarstan, Chuvashia, etc.

Hey!

I’m a spanish guy who just came up to Shanghai. I want to share my appartment with a student guy
or girl. The whole place is quite nice. For two reasons basically: because it’s quite new,
everything is really really nice, there are no “chinese” surprises, everything is fashion designed
and it has all the needs a western person could have (in fact the compound was built two years
ago) and my landlord is an old woman who is bloody funny She’s 80 years old and she likes to speak
French with me!

I was looking for so long for a nice appartment that I didn’t think too much much when I found
this, and it’s quite cheap (I think my landlord don’t care about the money she just want to have a
nice laowai to chat with ha ha. The problem is the house is too big for me, I only use half the
house and it’s not funny to clean the whole appartment every weekend. And I feel a big part of the
house is wasted.

It has two bedrooms (you can put three beds in every bedroom if you want…), a huge saloon, two
modern bathrooms, huge kitchen an ever bigger terrace with long view of all Shanghai and it’s
located on a very rare but believe me! a quiet neighborhood. The appartment is in Jing’An. You
have everything around (Citibank 3 minutes walking, supermarket everything..) At first I didn’t
want to share cause I was expecting to live alone by myself but the house is too much house for
me. And I’m staying just one year here in Shanghai. And the money probably will let me do some
quite nice journeys around China.

If you are interested please send me and e-mail. I can show pictures of the home but I need a
placemate really soon cause I’m decorating the house , so you’re still at time if you have
personal choices

My email is vndavid@gmail.com
My phone number here in Shanghai is 13764862245

If you are in Shanghai we can meet one day and I’ll show you the appartment. Money is not a big
deal, we can talk about this later, I’m not a landlord and I have enough money to live by my own.

火 Is more 阳, but it can be a girl’s name. For example, 火鳳 (Fire Phoenix) or 火玉 (fire
jade). However, if you use 火 in any names in modern days, it might sounded too country flavored
(as in country bumpkin). That’s just my opinion.

fireball9261 -

I am very opinionated and sounded arrogant sometimes. My friend told me that if I just added “it’s
only my opinion”, I would not sound so arrogant. Therefore, I try to do it when I remember. Ha ha!
